Basseterre Health Centre Architectural Drawing 1947

We have been asked many questions about health centres over the past couple of weeks. Then we found this drawing produced in 1947 for the health centre in Basseterre. It was designed by the Ag Assistant Engineer J Mitchell in Antigua. It underwent several revisions. At first it was estimated that it would cost $5600.00 to build but the cost quickly went up to $7000.00. The land that was finally chosen was government owned. There […]

Manifesto – Democratic Party 1957

Today, with the elections over, we were cataloging the various manifestos, party and personal, that we received. In one of the acid free boxes in which we keep them safe, we came across a one sheet item. It was the manifesto of the Democratic Party. Like so many publications that surface in St. Kitts, it was undated and did not name a publisher or a place of publication. A look through the election results of […]

Sumnambulo 1888

This week we would like to share with you the only copy of The Sumnambulo that has survived at the National Archives. This was a weekly newspaper published and printed in Charlestown, Nevis. The name of the paper means “sleepwalker.” Why it was chosen is anybody’s guess. Perhaps it was meant to indicate that Nevis was a quiet place. The paper was edited by T E Archibald and published by R Nathaniel Cox. It lacks […]

War-spite to the Dominican Republic

Our item today was a big surprise when we found it. For years we had been telling researchers that we had no information on the persons who went to work in the cane fields of the Dominican Republic. This was because we have yet to find any records from whatever government agency handled migration at the time. This is still the case. However last November when going through the Administrators files we found one on […]
