19th Century Photographs
The oldest photographs in our collection are portraits of Moses Dickenson and his wife Mary nee Mallalieu. They were taken some time in the 1880s. We would like to thank Hans Mallalieu for entrusting them to our care. We have some other images from that period but not the original photographs.
Moses Dickenson was born on the 26 Oct 1860 to Richard Dickenson and his wife Leanna nee Menders. Mary Mallalieu was the daughter of William Mallalieu and Ann nee Maillard. She was born on the 2 Nov 1859. Moses and Mary were married at St Ann’s Anglican Church in 1882. They had 9 children – Clarice 1883, Frederica 1885, Mabel 1887, Myra 1889, Maud 1891, Moses 1893, Pierson 1895, Violet 1897, and Cyril 1902. Moses was an estate manager, first at Belmont then at Heldens and lastly at La Vallee.
The photographer was probably Carl Constantine Lyon who was originally from St. Barth but who spent a lot of time in St. Kitts and actually died here at his residence in Rosemary Lane in 1914 at the age of 75.
