Emily and Joe 1937
Our item today is an issue of the St. Kitts-Nevis Daily Bulletin published by A M Losada. The article we want to highlight is a column called “Emily and Joe” on page 3. It is written in dialect and focuses on the candidates for the election that was due to take place that year. This was the first time in almost 80 years since an election had taken place in St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla and the first time that the franchise included more than just planters and merchants. The Candidates that year were Clement Malone, a highly respected lawyer, Edgar Challenger and Patrick Ryan both businessmen, Thomas Manchester and W H Walwyn, planters. All are mentioned in the piece. Another theme for the year was the coronation of George VI which seems to have been given more prominence in Nevis where a pageant actually took place.
The column continued to appear in the newspaper from time to time.
We have opted to share the whole newspaper for that date as many of our readers have in the past found other items of interest among the articles carried in the issue.
